Immigration and visa

  • In general, all visitors to Hong Kong must have a passport that is valid for at least one month after the period of their intended stay in Hong Kong. 

  • Nationals of most countries (except Afghanistan, Bangladesh,  India, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam) do not require a visa to enter Hong Kong for tourism and can stay for periods varying from seven to 180 days, depending on nationality. If you’re unsure of your status, please check with any Chinese embassy or consulate.

Airport and arrival

  • Located on the Lantau Island, the Hong Kong International Airport has a comprehensive and well-developed transportation network.

  • It’s approximately 42km from the conference hotel 

  • Airport Express takes approximately 24 minutes to reach Hong Kong Island and is the fastest way to get between the city and the airport.

  • Taxi and Airbus “A” routes are conveniently available. 

  • Passengers who require their own personal limousines, minivans, vans and group coaches (buses) can book their transport from service providers located in the Arrivals Hall.

  • The time zone in Hong Kong is GMT+8

 

Currency and payment

  • The currency in Hong Kong is the Hong Kong dollar (HKD). Exchange rates vary but the average is 1 USD: 7.82HKD. 

  • Most international credit cards are accepted at hotels, shops, and restaurants in Hong Kong. Some stores also accept mobile payments like Apple Pay, Google Pay, Alipay, and WeChat Pay. You can find out which payment methods are accepted by checking the signs displayed at the entrance or cash register.​

  • There are still some shops and restaurants in Hong Kong that only accept cash or Octopus cards, so it is recommended that you visit a currency exchange to obtain enough cash before venturing out. 

  • Tipping is not mandatory in Hong Kong. Most hotels and restaurants charge a service fee already, and if not, can consider "rounding up" or letting them "keep the change."

 

Weather

  • Hong Kong’s weather is pleasant most of the time and doesn’t experience extremes, as its sub-tropical. It does get quite humid in summer.

  • Average temperature in Hong Kong for April: High of 25°C (77°F) and Low of 20°C (68°F)

 

Languages

  • Chinese and English are the official languages. English is widely used within the Government and also by the legal, professional and business sectors.

  • Most Hongkongers are bilingual if not trilingual (Cantonese, Mandarin, English).

 

Electricity

  • Electricity in Hong Kong is 220 V. Hong Kong uses the UK-style plug, which is three-pronged.
